Aishwarya Rai

Iruvar

Iruvar

Released: 1997

Character: Pushpa

Co-Starring: Mohanlal, Prakash Raj
Director: Mani Ratnam
Music: A. R. Rahman

Directed by the one and only Mani Ratnam, Iruvar has Mohanlal (of Kaalapaani fame) and Prakash Raj as the co-stars. Aishwarya Rai debuts in the Tamil filmdom through this film with a twin role. Hey! Iruvar means two doesn’t it? The story is not clear to me, but I’m told it comes close to the lives of Ms. Jayalalitha and the late MGR. This Aishwarya Rai says, could be the reason for the bad performance of the movie as the audience drew parallels of the movie with their lives.
I never actually got to see this movie. Tamil movies don’t hit this side of the world and it didn’t do well enough to be dubbed into Hindi. Nevertheless, Aishwarya established herself as an actress with tremendous potential. All the glimpse that I got of the film were its songs ‘Vennilaa Vennilaa...’ and ‘Hello Mr. Enthirkkatchi...’ shown on TV and Aishwarya Rai is simply stunning, one just seems to get lost into her movements. The songs from this movie are good with A. R. Rehman giving the score. ‘Hello Mr. Enthirkkatchi...’ rendered by Harini is simply great, and the picturisation of this song has been done beautifully.
Help is solicited from those who can give more information about this movie.

Aur Pyar Ho Gaya

Aur Pyar Ho Gaya Released: 15 August 1997

Character: Ashi
Award Won: Screen Videocon '97 Best Female Debut Award

Co-Starring: Bobby Deol
Director: Rahul Rawail
Music Director: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

This is the one through which Aishwarya Rai set foot into the world of films. Though Iruvar made it to the theatres much before ...Aur Pyar Ho Gaya (APHG) it was this film that she had signed on first. Directed by Rahul Rawail, APHG has Bobby Deol as her co-star and Shammi Kapoor and Anupam Kher in the supporting role. Like Iruvar, this one too didn’t do too well.
The music given by late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is good. Exceptionally good ones are Meri Sason Mein..., Sitara Aankhen and Thodasa Pagala. To a certain extent her dancing skills were brought out in Thodasa Pagala. Aishwarya Rai’s ability to act has been satisfactorily exploited here.
The story’s pretty thin with not too much of strength in it. It passes off as a light flick, with some poor show of special effects in the end.
